the day the dreadlocks went free

johannesburg, south africa (2018)

originally my dreadlocks grew from 2003 to 2009. ever since the first cut in 2009 I was looking for a way to let them go free. since selling them or putting them in a rubbish bag was not an option, i decided to reapply them back on my head, go to the place where their story began and let them go for real. able to fly away and be free - having freedom and peace

life happened
regularly when it's winter it does not rain in johannesburg. but it did rain exactly in this 30 min. we cut the dreadlocks.
because of the unexpected addition of water dreadlocks and balloons were heavier than calculated. therefore only some flew away straight after the cut. others did so after the sun was back out and some were taken by children from the neighborhood to play with.

in short
on different ways than I had imagined and expected, each dreadlock with its 3 balloons found an individual path.

reminder
• truly letting go means to let go of all personal plans and expectations of the paths taken after you have let go.

• rain is a blessing. take the blessing. learn from the blessing and be thankful not everything is going your way.
